A Year Beyond Boundaries: DataCite’s 2023 Recap

The journey of a year is like a tapestry, woven with threads of growth, innovation, and community. As we bid farewell to 2023, join us in unraveling some important reflections and accomplishments.

Growing Together in Community

Our community is experiencing robust growth, marked by growth in member repositories and a remarkable increase in DOI registrations. We are nearing the end of the year with over 3,000 repositories and over 57 million DOIs, with tens of millions of resolutions every month. These numbers signify broader adoption of best practices within DataCite. Beyond statistical metrics, our community is a global nexus, facilitating connections between researchers and institutions on a scale that transcends geographical boundaries. The enhancements to our metadata infrastructure mean that every integration point shared within our community contributes to a more intricately woven, interconnected narrative of knowledge.

Global Access Program

We were very excited that through the launch of the Global Access Program (GAP) this year, we were able to reach regions currently underrepresented within our community and work with them to connect their outputs into the global research ecosystem. As part of the GAP, we introduced the Global Access Fund (GAF), addressing financial barriers for underrepresented communities accessing Persistent Identifier (PID) infrastructure. The first GAF funding round received 185 applications from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Join us in this journey by contributing to the Global Access Fund, directly supporting underrepresented regions and the need for local technical infrastructure across these regions.

Advancements in Technology

Within the realm of technology, we’ve not only focused on fortifying our foundation but also propelled innovation through iterative functionality launches and the introduction of new services throughout the year. This commitment extends beyond stability; it’s about consistently enhancing our open infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of our community. Additionally, the introduction of new services demonstrates our proactive approach to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, ensuring that DataCite remains dynamic in the open scholarly infrastructure landscape. In the past year, DataCite achieved a record of almost 20 million registered DOIs, with a significant contribution from a successful partnership with the IGSN community. We also introduced new features in DataCite Commons, including dashboards for DMP and Project pages, and addressed technical debt by upgrading frontend frameworks and infrastructure components for improved stability and maintainability.

Financial Stability and Operational Maturation

Our continued financial stability isn’t just a result of prudent cost management; it’s a reflection of our commitment to maturing operational processes best adapted to our growing community. As we expand and welcome new members, we recognize the importance of fine-tuning our operational strategies to ensure efficiency and scalability, all while strategically allocating resources to support the diverse needs of our community. The ongoing maturation of our operational processes is a testament to DataCite’s proactive stance in navigating the complexities of financial management within a dynamic and expanding ecosystem.

Significant Impact with Make Data Count

In the realm of impactful initiatives, DataCite is more than a bystander. The launch of the Global Data Citation Corpus marks a significant milestone, opening the opportunity to deliver a centralized hub that amplifies the visibility and accessibility of data citations on a global scale. Beyond data citations, the introduction of the Usage Tracker provides a tool for repositories to more easily normalize and track data usage, fostering a culture of transparency and supporting the further development of data metrics.

Growing Through Collaborative Partnerships

Our partnerships are vital threads in the rich tapestry of DataCite’s growth. Engaging closely with organizations such as Crossref, ORCID, and others, DataCite is actively pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in data citation. Our collaborations with IGSN, DiSSCo, DMPtool, RDA, NFDI, and EOSC signify our commitment to weaving a more interconnected fabric of knowledge across various domains. To deepen our commitment, we’re launching the DataCite Ambassador Program, forming a network of volunteers to raise awareness and promote best practices globally.

Our global team, now 27 members strong across 12 countries, serves as the backbone of our collaborative efforts. Together, we invest in scalable and efficient resource utilization, ensuring that every member benefits from the overall vision of connected research.

As we reflect on a year filled with achievements, growth, and collaboration, we extend our deepest gratitude to the entire DataCite community. Together, we’ve woven a tapestry that reflects our accomplishments and sets the stage for a future where research outputs and resources are connected to advance knowledge.

Stay tuned for what lies ahead! Thank you for being part of our extraordinary year!
